The Washington State Apprenticeship Council and the U. S. Department of Labor formally approved the new Code Official Apprenticeship Program (COAP) along with the standard and related supplemental instruction plan. This is the first in the nation apprenticeship program sponsored by an association. Now the real work begins for the official committee, which will be recruiting jurisdictions and apprentices to participate.
The Committee set up standards for the "Code Official Apprenticeship Program (COAP)," Members of the COAP Committee are:
- John P. Neff, CBO, (Chair)
- Dick Bower, CBO, City of Gig Harbor
- Mary Kate McGee, CBO, City of Spokane Valley
- Gary Allsup, City of Lacey (Secretary)
- Scott Hopp, City of Olympia
- Paul Rice, City of Gig Harbor
- Julie Rogers, WABO Executive Director (Training Director)
- Ed Madden, Apprenticeship Consultant, Washington Dept. of Labor
- Anne Wetmore, Consultant, U. S. Department of Labor
The new apprenticeship program for training of building and other code inspectors is established to provide an industry-wide structured system of employment, education and training. The program will be a first step of a career ladder for occupations such as building inspectors, plan reviews, designers, and other code officials interested in providing safe buildings for our communities. It will also provide a method to pass on our collective skills, knowledge, experience and wisdom to assure a common foundation for future generations of code inspectors.
Benefits for a jurisdiction include:
-
Capture the expertise of your experienced workers.
-
Reduce labor costs by hiring a qualified individual at apprentice wage.
-
Encourage minorities and women to enter this exciting field.
-
Foster loyalty of your apprentice and after completion of the program, have a well-trained journey level employee.
-
Reinforce a uniform set of life safety and code standards throughout your state.
Apprentices will be required to complete the training outlined in the Required Supplemental Instruction (RSI) Once you become an approved Apprentice, your classes are offered at a reduced rate.
