2017 WABO Fall Business Meeting

The WABO Fall Quarterly Business Meeting will be held on October 19 -20, 2017 at Campbell's Resort in Chelan, Washington.  Don't wait to reserve your room at Campbell's Resort as the rooms are filling fast!   WABO room block ends September 18 with a special rate of $128 for Traditional and $168 for Deluxe.  If this is your first meeting, sign up for a WABO scholarship which covers your registration and a two-night hotel stay.

For those who have not attended a WABO Quarterly meeting before, the Code Forum is a standing agenda item where participants discuss technical, process, administrative and other issues pertaining to the building code enforcement profession.  Now you can share your ideas for Code Forum topics before you get to the quarterly meetings via WABO’s interactive email server designed specifically to let you write down your Code Forum ideas before you forget them.

David Spencer Elected to ICC Board of Directors

International Code Council voting members elected Board Officers and Directors during the
association's Annual Business Meeting at the 2017 Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio.  Jay Elbettar, P.E., CBO, building official, city of Mission Viejo, Calif., was elected President of the ICC Board. Bill Bryant, MCP, CBO, assistant director of the Inspections and Permits Department of Anne Arundel County, Md., was elected Vice President, and Greg Wheeler, chief building official, city of Thornton, Colo., was elected Secretary/Treasurer. Voting members also elected representatives to sectional and at-large positions on the board.  WABO member, David Spencer, building official for SAFEbuilt was elected to a three year board position. Congratulations David!

cdpACCESS open for Group A code cycle

Get your proposals ready. The International Code Council's cloud-based system for the code development process — cdpACCESS — is scheduled to open on Oct. 2 for the 2018/2019 Group A code change cycle. The Group A cycle will include egress, fire safety and general provisions of the International Building Code; mechanical and plumbing provisions of the International Residential Code; and code changes to the International Fire, Fuel Gas, Mechanical, Plumbing, Property Maintenance, Private Sewage and Disposal, Swimming Pool and Spa, Wildland Urban-Interface, and Zoning Codes.

SDCI Releases URM Policy Committee Recommendations  

On August 3, the Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) released the URM (Unreinforced Masonry) Policy Committee recommendations. First convened by SDCI in 2011, the policy committee brought together URM property owners, geological and seismology experts, structural engineers, architects, housing and real estate development representatives, and historic preservation professionals to develop recommendations on a city-wide URM seismic retrofit policy. After a hiatus to allow SDCI to gather more information, the policy committee reconvened in late 2016 to finalize their recommendations.

WABO 2017 Annual Business Meeting

Members from around the state took time from their busy schedules to gather at Tulalip Conference Center for the 2017 WABO Annual Business Meeting.  This meeting included the annual elections of board members and the Awards Banquet on Thursday night.  WABO was honored to welcome ICC Board members, Jay Elbettar and Brenda Thompson who provided members with an update of critical issues from a national perspective.

With the gaining popularity of "tiny homes", Labor & Industries presented an informative presentation on the growing industries of food trucks and timy homes manufacturing. Several changes were discussed, including a new web page added to the Factory Assembled Structures web site, a new Advisory Committee, and chnages to State Law 9HB 2443). WABO Code Official Accreditation Program

WABO has been working with South Seattle College to put together a three-year online program to provide in-depth training for those who want to increase their knowledge of working in the public sector as a building code professional.   For those interested in starting the program, year one registrations will be accepted Winter 2017.
