Applying the International Existing Building Code (2-Day Seminar)  ICC Preferred Provider Training 1.4 CEU's
In most jurisdictions we deal with existing buildings on a daily basis. This two-day course will cover, in detail, the requirements of the 2018 IEBC in addition to highlighting existing building requirements from other referenced codes and standards. This course will be broken down as follows:

  • Day 1 - The IEBC allows for multiple paths of compliance when an existing building is undergoing repairs, alterations, additions, or changes in occupancy. The first day will provide an overall introduction to the layout of the IEBC as well as a discussion of its importance. The portions of the code that apply to all projects will be discussed. The IEBC provides multiple paths for compliance, and this first day will focus on the "Prescriptive" path. Numerous examples will be used to highlight the specific triggers within the IEBC to make existing buildings more compliant with current codes.
  • Day 2 - The second day will focus on the "Work Area" and "Performance" paths of compliance. Numerous examples will be provided for each. The last portion of the class will include example projects that will be looked at from a prescriptive, work area, and performance approach so that attendees will have a good feel for the limitations and benefits of each method.

Course Objectives

  1. To understand the different paths of code compliance included within the IEBC.
  2. To understand the limitations of the performance compliance method.
  3. To know how to work with building owners to make their buildings safe.
